Two anchors were recovered from Matthew Flinders boat Investigator (lost in 1803) by the South Australian University diving team in Goose Island Bay, 130 km east of Esperance, on 19 January 1973. Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia.
